Project Description

Elegant Country Home

Set in the Whitford peninsula, the owners sought a home which matched the architectural language of other country estates in the area. Our starting point was the existing raised building platform which offered extensive views out to the islands of the Waitemata Harbour. After ensuring that the geotechnical conditions suited the siting, this home was designed with public and private elevations dominated by sun and view orientation.

The owners sought to use Oamaru stone as a wall cladding throughout, which was a rewarding challenge for both the designer and structural engineer. Extensive detailing around gables, soffit lines and ensuring heights were set to stone modules have resulted in a cohesive finished envelope to the building. The steeply-pitched roof creates ample room to contain the upper level, and a circular atrium and stairway provides a grand central feature in this elegant country home.
