Redoubt

Set in a semirural neighbourhood of large properties with undulating land and pockets of established native bush, this contemporary home is a response to the slope and shape of the site’s building platform. With monolithic plaster rendered solid concrete walls, the public southern approach to the dwelling is marked with minimal windows providing formality and privacy. The northeast to northwest facing aspects of the building, by contrast, are made up of vast areas of glazing, which allow an informal transparency to appreciate the valley views.

To suit the natural slope of the site, this home utilises six floor levels accessed by stairs cantilevered from a honed block wall. The parapet walls seek to disguise the true height of the building from approaching visitors, helped by the darkly coloured weatherboard cladding of the upper floor.
